Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara play husband and wife in the funniest show you’re not watching, “Schitt’s Creek.” The two, with co-stars Dan Levy and Annie Murphy, sit down on TODAY to chat about the new season, premiering Thursday.

The first event for the new year and how beautiful Catherine looked. Sadly Schitt’s Creek didn’t win but being nominated is already a huge step into noticing good quality things in this business. Enjoy HQ photos of Catherine at the Critics’ Choice Awards

Of all the people who love the character of Moira Rose on the CBC-TV comedy Schitt’s Creek, it seems no one loves her more than the actress who plays her, Canadian comedy legend Catherine O’Hara.

“No!” O’Hara exclaims emphatically when I suggest during a chat about the show that Moira is selfish.

“I will defend her to the death,” she says with a laugh.

For the uninitiated, Moira is the over-the-top matriarch of the Rose family, a former soap-opera star married to a filthy rich video-store magnate (played by O’Hara’s former SCTVco-star Eugene Levy). The couple loses everything and are forced to move with their two spoiled adult kids to Schitt’s Creek, a small town they bought as a joke.

Over four successful seasons — the fifth begins Jan. 8 at 9 p.m. — the family has slowly adapted to its reduced circumstances. Johnny (Levy) has focused on turning around the rundown motel they live in; son David (Levy’s real-life son Daniel) has opened a store and started a relationship; daughter Alexis (Annie Murphy) has also found love and new maturity.

Moira has grown, too — she has made friends and turned her considerable energies to trying to improve the town — but O’Hara feels she is the character who’s hanging on hardest to the life the Roses used to live and intend to return to someday.
